According to a BBC storey, a man was detained in Lahore in connection with the murder of a 25-year-old British lady of Pakistani descent. Mayra Zulfiqar, who had travelled in Pakistan earlier this year to attend a wedding, was found dead with two gunshot wounds and evidence of torture on her body at a leased apartment in Lahore.
After Zulfiqar’s uncle named him and another guy as significant suspects in the murder case, Zahir Jadoon was held by the police but not formally arrested. According to the BBC, the second man has not yet been detained and is claimed to be assisting with the inquiry. Jadoon’s brother and the driver had been imprisoned earlier.
According to legal records obtained by the BBC, Zulfiqar, a law graduate, had been intimidated by two men after she rejected marriage proposals from each of them. A guy had abducted Zulfiqar at gunpoint and attempted to sexually attack her a few days prior, according to a police report made by her on April 20.
By warning passersby, she was able to flee. Zulfiqar said the man threatened her, saying, “You won’t be able to escape; I will kill you,” as per BBC.
Muhammad Zulfiqar, Zulfiqar’s father, had pleaded for assistance to Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani Nobel Peace Prize laureate who was shot by the Taliban in 2012 for her work as an advocate for women’s education. Mayra Zulfiqar was Muhammad’s daughter, and Muhammad urged Yousafazai to fight for her.
“My dear daughter Malala, I appeal to you for God’s sake please raise your voice for my daughter. She was like your sister,” he told The Associated Press late on Thursday. “Your voice is heard. The only difference is that you have gone abroad after studying here and my daughter came to Pakistan to serve humanity.”
